Metadata is information about your digital objects that allows them to be searched and accessed by users--the equivalent of cataloging information for a book. Metadata provides the technical details of how an object was digitized, and describes the original analog object and the subject(s) represented.

Debbie Cardinal:Matt Blessing from Marquette emailed this: We use "source" at MU, although it appears within "collection." In terms of consortia agreements, keep in mind that we (and I assume others) are involved in projects other than WHO, such as a digital repository for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The AJCU project does use "source," so this isn't as simple as turning it off.
Sharon:I've used Source in our Local History Books collection. We're informing the public where the hard copy can be found in our collection. I have to admit that I've used it for photos that can be found in one of our Local History books. I would like to see some reference to a source even if we need to use Relation instead.
Leah Ujda:I'm perhaps a bit biased, but I like the UWDCC explanation of the Source field. I think users relate to specific examples, and the use case scenarios that are in the UWDCC documentation are broad and cover a variety of different materials. If users are discouraged from using the Source field, then maybe it would be more helpful to have the Dublin Core guidelines for Relation? It's a little confusing to say don't use this... but if you do here's how to do it.
