Meeting Minutes

Not Present: Jane Weinkes, Kelly Herold, Jessica Williams

We discussed the timeframe for the metadata mapping exercise, DUE in AUGUST. There was consensus among the group that this was a reasonable timeframe. Paul asked whether there would be a communication mechanism, specifically a way for the group to share their maps. Claudia suggested that perhaps the templates from everyone could be combined to show clearly similarities and differences.

We also reviewed the charge of the group and agreed that it should be more specific. Debbie will work on this and send out a message for review and comment. Tentatively, the group agreed that the charge will reflect a data dictionary or metadata template specifically for use by museums and historical societies. Claudia suggested that collection management systems may influence what fields will be used, so perhaps the final template will have suggested usage based on collection management system.

Linda wondered how exactly the SiteSearch search interface in WHO worked. For the basic Keyword search, what fields are being searched, in what order? Is there some kind of hierarchy or ranking assigned? This may influence what fields the group chooses to map to Subject, the main problem Dublin Core field. (SEE Linda's email message from Peter Gorman about this.) Abbie will work with Jessica Williams and/or Peter Gorman on a “featured speaker’ meeting during the summer.

The best news from the group is that a few people have started at least thinking about how to map their collection fields to the WHO Dublin Core set and everyone was very hopeful that it could be done. Louise Pfotenhauer’s assurances from her work on the Metadata Working Group, bolstered the group’s growing confidence.

Communication throughout the summer about metadata template usage can be accomplished in several ways:

  1. Use the museum@wils.wisc.edu email list and just email things back and forth.
  2. Use the wiki, http://wiheritage.pbwiki.com/Museum+working+group?full_access=HA8Q6l4FU0&l=S, logging in with password ‘history’.

NOTE: I got a message today from the wiki about some new tools that might be fun to play with. Here’s the URL for video training: http://blog.pbwiki.com/2007/06/26/latest-features-roundup-spreadsheets-voice-chat-event-planning-calendars-video-upload/.

3. I asked Tom Zillner, our techie to set the group up with a BLOG. You can elect to use this or not. I hope I’ll get to send you instructions and get you started. I’ll let you know later.

Abbie Norderhaug, Chair, will take over organizing and managing meetings. Sorry, Abbie. The most time consuming part of what I’ve been doing is getting meetings going! You can have our Shirley Shenning set up the WisLine Web or WisLine (just phone) meetings for the group. Her email address is schenning@wils.wisc.edu.
