You may not have staff, equipment or space to do your own digitization. There are services that will do it for you.

 

  1. Preservation Service Centers
    1. OCLC’s Preservation Service Centers in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Lacey, Washington; Richmond, Virginia; Winnipeg, Manitoba; and The Hague, The Netherlands, provide libraries with scanning, digital services, and custom microfilming that libraries need to preserve their collections and provide broad access for future generations.
    2. Newspaper focus—over 2 million newspaper pages digitized, all types including student, daily and weekly newspapers that cover local, regional, national and institutional news.
    3. Get a complete solution for digital newspaper projects: the centers can load converted newspapers’ METS/ALTO and PDF formats into CONTENTdm software.
    4. docWORKS Newspaper Edition software, based on NDNP specifications. Converted newspapers can be exported in all NDNP formats: METS/ALTO, PDF, JPEG2000 and TIFF.
    5. NDNP contract winner capable of providing NDNP requirements. NDNP guidelines available at www.loc.gov/ndnp/, with an overview of the program available at http://www.neh.gov/projects/ndnp.html.
    6. Services for all other media formats: print, audio, video, photos, slides and negatives, oversize books, manuscripts, clipping files, etc.
    7. A quote service for different format: http://www.oclc.org/preservation/about/rfps/default.htm. Fill out one of these forms for your project material and receive a cost quote from OCLC.
  2. Northern Micrographics, in La Crosse, Wisconsin
    • Offers high quality imaging products and services. NM can scan bound or disbound material as well as microfilm in 16, 35, 105 and aperture card format.  A number of digital imaging post-processing services are available including cropping, deskewing, despeckling, OCRing and image derivative production. Northern Micrographics can also assist with indexing, file directory structure development, and metadata development.
    • Our production facilities offer state of the art equipment and processes to allow the best image capture possible while maintaining the integrity of the original material.
    • Northern Micrographics can also help place your digital collection online with NDLSWeb. NDLSWeb provides a cost effective yet robust method for storing, searching and viewing your digital images. 
  3. Backstage Library Works does both onsite and offsite scanning.
  4. Luna Imaging does digitization for libraries and museums.
  5. iArchives can do newspapers as well as more usual documents. They've digitized materials for a number of featured CONTENTdm collections.

 

Other Vendor Services

 

 

  1. ResCarta Foundation: A non-profit organization that exists to provide a community for the creation and dissemination of OPEN SOURCE and freely downloadable tools for creating digital collections at no cost to libraries, museums and archives.  A complete suite of tools is availaibe at the foundations website for downloading.  Full source code is also provided for institutions who wish to make enhancements to the projects.  ResCarta tools produce full METS and MODS metadata by using simple forms. ResCarta also has links to other open source tools for providing OAI-PMH from a ResCarta collection.
