WHO Term Definitions

Member Institution – An institution, business, non-profit or governmental agency whose dues are paid in full.

Partners – An institution, individual, business, non-profit or governmental agency that commits to a substantial share of expenses of organizing or running the WHO services including: contractual staff or expertise, run the host site for content clients, reformatting service provider or host for reformatting equipment shared with other institutions. In 2006, there are four identified partners: State Library (DLTCL), University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW), Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS), Wisconsin Library Services (WiLS).

Content Client – A member that has, through additional agreement, loaded its digital content on the CONTENTdm server (also called the content server) maintained by WHS. Only WHO members may use the hosting service. Content clients must agree to allow WHO to harvest the metadata of this content; so therefore, all content clients are metadata clients.

Metadata Client – A digital content provider that has agreed to allow the harvesting of their content’s metadata (regardless of where it is hosted) by University of Wisconsin to be placed within the WHO metadata index. Nonmembers of WHO with appropriate content may be contacted to become metadata clients. Since metadata clients will include many content providers who do their own hosting, not all metadata clients are also content clients.

Content – digital representations of physical research materials or artifacts or born digital records that serve the same purpose AND the accompanying metadata that has been recorded regarding that item.

Content Server – The server hosted and run by Wisconsin Historical Society where content clients’ digitized content resides. Currently this server is managed by

CONTENTdm software.

Metadata index – The on-line, searchable index hosted and run by UW comprised of metadata harvested from metadata clients. This index may be given a "brand name" at some future point. Currently, this index is managed by "SiteSearch" software.

Wisconsin Heritage Online website – The portal for searching the metadata index, displaying the retrieved metadata and thumbnails and then linking out to the home server of the selected digital content item.
